D printing appeals to nearly everyone, sometimes the thought of having to build your own model can be daunting. If you’re not familiar with using 3. D modeling or mechanical CAD software, the goal of turning your idea into a tangible object can seem like an impossibility. Jonathan Williamson of Blender. Cookie has just posted a video that can get you past that boundary. In his video, Jonathan shows you how to model the Blender mascot, Suzanne, and walks you through the questions that you should ask when building a model for 3. D printing. Most important among these questions are: What is the real- world size of my model? Will my model be solid or shelled? If it’s shelled, how thick should I make the walls? Is my model structurally sound? Answering these questions is crucial to creating a successful 3. D print and bringing your ideas to life. Image Courtesy of Blender Cookie. Configuring Blender for CADBlender is a powerful, flexible and free 3. D design tool. Initially it appears to be lacking the tools for CAD however with some configuration it’s possible to use precise positioning and rotation along with measuring distances. This article is written for Blender 2. Keyboard shortcuts are in parentheses. If you are brand new to Blender I highly recommend the series of tutorials by cgboorman on You. Tube and this article assumes you have gone through his tutorials one to six which introduce the basics of Blender. Start blender and choose View - > Top (numpad 7) and View - > Ortho (numpad 5). Choose View - > Properties (N) to open the properties panel. Expand the Display section. Click on “Z” to show the Z- axis and increase the number of grid lines from 1. In the Properties window (not the properties panel) – which is by default shown on the right – click on the Scene tab. Under Units click on Metric and for the scale enter “0. Choose File - > User Preferences and click on Addons. Click on 3. D View on the left then expand the 3. D View: Measure Panel item. Check the checkbox at the top right to enable the measure panel addon then close the preferences. Close the timeline window by merging the 3. D View with the timeline. In the information bar at the top create a new screen layout by clicking on the + and enter the name CAD. Choose File - > Save User Settings. Back in the properties panel (N) scroll down to the bottom and a new section called Measure has been added. Click on the Activate button and expand the section. At this point the measurement from the origin of the current object to the 3. D cursor is shown. These measurements are updated as you move the 3. D cursor and when you move the selected object. In the properties panel (N) it is now possible to precisely position an object by directly entering the X, Y and Z values in metric units. For example you can enter “2mm”, “4. It is also possible to set the dimensions in metric units and the rotation in degrees. The position of the 3. D cursor can be precisely set in metric units as well. When you restart blender this CAD- friendly configuration will be restored. The measure tool has to be activated each time but that is just a case of scrolling down to the bottom of the properties panel and clicking on the Activate button. Having measurements for a cube based on the center is not too user friendly for CAD. It can be moved to a corner with the following steps: Assuming you have the default cube which is 2mm in size and the location of the cube is 0mm, 0mm, 0mm, open the properties panel (N) and move the 3. D cursor to - 1mm, - 1mm, - 1mm. This puts the 3. D cursor on the bottom left vertex of the cube. Choose Object - > Transform - > Origin to 3. D Cursor. The small dot that denotes the object origin will move to the vertex. The properties panel (N) will now show the location of the cube to be - 1mm, - 1mm, - 1mm. Finally grid snapping can be turned on by clicking on the magnet icon at the bottom of the 3. D view. Once enabled moving or resizing an object will snap it to the 1mm grid. For other people of Australia, see Australian people. Indigenous Australians(Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders)Total population. Australia's population (2. The earliest definite human remains found in Australia are those of Mungo Man, which have been dated at about 4. In present- day Australia these groups are further divided into local communities. The population of Indigenous Australians at the time of permanent European settlement has been estimated at between 3. It comes from the Latin word aborigines, derived from ab (from) and origo (origin, beginning). It soon became capitalised and employed as the common name to refer to all Indigenous Australians. Strictly speaking, Aborigine is the noun and Aboriginal the adjectival form; however, the latter is often also employed as a noun. Use of either Aborigine(s) or Aboriginal(s) to refer to individuals has acquired negative connotations in some sectors of the community, and it is generally regarded as insensitive and even offensive. The term Indigenous Australians, which also includes Torres Strait Islander peoples, has found increasing acceptance, particularly since the 1. These include. Men and boys playing a game of gorri, 1. These larger groups may be further subdivided; for example, Anangu (meaning a person from Australia's central desert region) recognises localised subdivisions such as Pitjantjatjara, Yankunytjatjara, Ngaanyatjarra, Luritja and Antikirinya. It is estimated that prior to the arrival of British settlers, the population of Indigenous Australians was approximately 3. The eastern Torres Strait Islanders in particular are related to the Papuan peoples of New Guinea, and speak a Papuan language. This has been another factor in the promotion of the more inclusive term . Six percent of Indigenous Australians identify themselves fully as Torres Strait Islanders. A further 4% of Indigenous Australians identify themselves as having both Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal heritage. The book included interviews with several members of the Aboriginal community including Robert Jabanungga reflecting on contemporary Aboriginal culture. A less formal term, used by Indigenous Australians themselves and not normally derogatory, is . Aboriginal people seem to have lived a long time in the same environment as the now extinct Australian megafauna. The research also suggests a divergence from the Papuan people of New Guinea and Mamanwa people of the Philippines about 3. Although Aboriginal society was generally mobile, or semi- nomadic, moving according to the changing food availability found across different areas as seasons changed, the mode of life and material cultures varied greatly from region to region, and there were permanent settlements. The greatest population density was to be found in the southern and eastern regions of the continent, the River Murray valley in particular. There is evidence that some Aboriginal populations in northern Australia regularly traded with Makassan fishermen from Indonesia before the arrival of Europeans. Each nation had its own language, and a few had several. Equally, there are signs that the population density of Indigenous Australia was comparatively higher in the north- eastern sections of New South Wales, and along the northern coast from the Gulf of Carpentaria and westward including certain sections of Northern Territory and Western Australia. Within Aboriginal belief systems, a formative epoch known as 'the Dreamtime' stretches back into the distant past when the creator ancestors known as the First Peoples travelled across the land, creating and naming as they went. There were a great many different groups, each with its own individual culture, belief structure, and language. These cultures overlapped to a greater or lesser extent, and evolved over time. Major ancestral spirits include the Rainbow Serpent, Baiame, Dirawong and Bunjil. Traditional healers (known as Ngangkari in the Western desert areas of Central Australia) were highly respected men and women who not only acted as healers or doctors, but were generally also custodians of important Dreamtime stories. The didgeridoo, which is widely thought to be a stereotypical instrument of Aboriginal people, was traditionally played by people of only the eastern Kimberley region and Arnhem Land (such as the Yolngu), and then by only the men. Evidence of Aboriginal art in Australia can be traced back at least 3. Murujuga in Western Australia has the Friends of Australian Rock Art have advocated its preservation, and the numerous engravings there were heritage listed in 2. While most Low- Residency MFA programs are distinguished by size, the Stetson MFA is unique in that it fills an essential cultural niche. The MFA of the Americas seeks to draw upon Florida's multicultural heritage by rotating summer residencies throughout the Americas, employing writers working cross- culturally and establishing ties with local and indigenous writers at summer residency sites. Two- Year Hybrid Program. Classroom and Online Work. Culminates in a master's degree focused on one of two genres: Fiction. Poetry in the Expanded Field. Students are admitted to the program primarily on the strength of the writing sample submitted with the application. To start each term, students attend working residencies where, over the course of ten intensive days, they take part in workshops, craft lectures, readings and discussions. January Residencies. Because we embrace all of the Americas, geographically and culturally, our faculty is nationally known writer- teachers, we gather in beautiful places, and we offer instruction in both fiction and poetry in the expanded field. Why this program? A Low- Residency MFA from Stetson University allows learning and life not only to coexist but to coordinate, consolidate, coalesce around the reading and writing that informs and reforms your work. We gather twice a year for ten intense days of workshops, readings, and craft talks in a dynamic community of established and beginning writers. Between workshops, students exchange packets of original work with a faculty mentor. The program culminates in a book- length project. You will develop a body of work that challenges and surprises you. While we accept all kinds of excellent writers, we especially encourage depth and experimentation throughout the two years of coursework. Faculty consists of lively and engaged writers and artists who are well- known in their fields and excellent educators. You will work closely with world- renowned writers, such as Mac. Arthur genius Edwidge Danticat and Francisco Goldman, whose The Ordinary Seaman was named one of the 1. Best American Books of the Century by The Hungry Mind Review. Patricia Engel, Ronaldo Wilson, Laura Mullen, and other talented guests have also graced our January and June residencies. This degree encourages students to grow as both writers and global citizens. The program follows all guidelines and best practices outlined by the Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP), of which Stetson University is a member. Poetry in the Expanded Field. Poetry in The Expanded Field is one of the few low- residency MFA curriculums committed to experimentation. It is interdisciplinary in nature. MFA students in Poetry in the Expanded Field arrive from different areas of artistic endeavor such as poetry, visual arts, sound and performance. They are self- motivated and challenge themselves to navigate between forms and modes of art. MFA students in Poetry in the Expanded Field have worked in dance, photography, video, social media, short prose forms, and graphic design. The multi- modal and multi- genre form encourages experimentation between the textual and the visual, exploring the relationship between the form and beyond it. Residency. The Atlantic Center for the Arts. The site of our January residency, the Atlantic Center for the Arts, is ideal for concentrated creation. It is not by chance that the ACA is one of the most significant art residency sites in the United States. For 1. 0 days in January, its award winning architecture belongs exclusively to Stetson MFA students. The site includes a sculpture studio, a painting studio, a music studio, a library, a computer studio, a dance studio, and a black box theater—students have access to all these facilities 2. The ACA is beautifully located in a natural preserve in New Smyrna Beach, FL, a short drive from the sea. International. In June we meet abroad. In June 2. 01. 6, we converged for our first international residency in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and the June, 2. Americas. Students will develop reading lists that include practitioners from host countries and become internationally educated in the respective fields. It is our intention that these cultural experiences will be used by MFA candidates to question their work and expand their practice. In January and June, students are invited to show or read from their projects on performance evenings at the Atlantic Center for the Arts and at our international residency. While presentations are directed at our own MFA community, they are also open to the general public. At the two- year program’s end, graduating students will return to the ACA for an evening of performance and celebration of their completed projects. Between Residencies. Between residencies, a student works directly with an instructor, exchanging four online “packets” of work and reading a book list established in concert with the instructor. In the final semester, a student completes a thesis- length project that for presentation (via public reading and craft lecture) in their final residency. New cohorts begin the program at the January residency, and the program culminates in a fifth and final graduation residency. Curriculum. The low- residency format unites the best of two worlds. During the 1. 0- day intensive workshops in January and June, MFA candidates attend morning classes, enjoy intimate conversations with internationally known visitors in the afternoons, and gather for readings and lectures by those same guests in the evening. During the semester, students meet their professors via Google hangout once a month (4 times a session) to talk about their work and its progress. Then we all meet again in June at an international location for a similar experience. The summer encounter holds as many classes, but fewer and different activities to allow students the time and breath to experience their surroundings and immerse themselves in a new culture.
